Spring Sing 2009 [UPDATE]

It was my first Spring Sing experience. It was quite possibly one of the best talent shows I have ever seen. Of course some of the acts didn’t seem up to par compared to others, and while Katie Boeck won the best performer award for the third consecutive year, overall it was just great.

It’s only the start of my weekend, yet I’ve already had as much fun as I have had in the past few weeks. First Star Trek, now Spring Sing. Awesome!

So as it turns out, there were some very famous celebrities that were able to make it out to the festivities tonight. One of the celebrity judges who came tonight was Melissa Joan Hart. Joining Melissa was one of the girls from Danity Kane and a few notable alumni. The big celebrity, though, was Julie Andrews. She gave a big speech on how she has devoted her life to saving the arts while also giving us her own personal autobiography. It was great and all that, but imho, her speech dragged on just a little too much.

Aside from the big celebrities that showed up, there were a few performances that I really wanted to mention. There was this asian guitar duet, Melissa and Emerson, and they sounded really wholesome and genuine when they played their song “So Right”. Of course I barely even know what a “genuine sound” means, but basically they sounded really nice. All of the bands at Spring Sing were all trying to go for the whole “indie” sound. And it kind of gets on your nerves after a while.

Then there was this guy Christopher Geno who played his song “Does It Matter?” and it was really, really good. Christopher ended up winning second place amongst the seventeen performances. I’m really glad he won that award because I felt like he really deserved it. The people I talk to seem to only remember him by his white hat, thus defining him by a “Jason Mraz” type of look. It’s unfortunate because he is nothing like Jason Mraz. Of course that’s not a knock on either artist, they’re just very different. Besides Christopher is good enough to make a name for himself; in fact I think he might end up hitting it big one day!

Then the last performance I enjoyed was this iPhone skit performed by the comedians on staff for the Student Alumni Association. It was basically a parody of the Jai-ho song and dance (end of Slumdog Millionaire), but based on the Apple Store and Mac products. The token dancing was present and everything. It was just really too funny.

Update: Here is the iPhone skit! Enjoy!
